Boat, RV & Vehicle Storage Tips

Properly preparing your boat, RV, car, truck, or trailer for storage can help prevent costly repairs and ensure it's ready to use when you need it again. Whether you're storing a vehicle for a few weeks or several months, a little preparation goes a long way.

One of the most important steps is to add a quality fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank before storage. Fuel can begin to deteriorate over time, leading to clogged fuel injectors, carburetor problems, and difficult starting. After adding the stabilizer, run the engine for several minutes to allow the treated fuel to circulate throughout the fuel system.

It's also a good idea to start the engine periodically during storage. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature so fluids can circulate and moisture can evaporate. If possible, drive the vehicle a short distance to keep seals lubricated and prevent flat spots from developing on the tires.

Additional storage tips include:

  • Clean the vehicle thoroughly, including the interior.
  • Remove food, trash, and other items that may attract pests.
  • Check tire pressure and inflate tires to the manufacturer's recommended level.
  • Disconnect the battery or use a battery maintainer to prevent discharge.
  • Change the engine oil if it is near its service interval.
  • Cover boats and RVs to protect them from sun, rain, and debris.
  • Verify that all windows, doors, compartments, and hatches are securely locked.
  • Remove valuable items and important documents.
  • Check fluid levels, including coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid.

Before placing your boat, RV, or vehicle into storage, confirm that your registration, insurance, and emergency contact information are current. Taking a few simple precautions today can help protect your investment and make your next trip on the road or water trouble-free!
